In a single meeting the Council confirmed a Supreme Court justice and the state’s Attorney General. Five elected people hold that power in New Hampshire. Wheeler is one of them.

He brought something to this vote nobody else at the table had. He had worked with Bryan Gould directly, back when Gould served as counsel to the Executive Council in the early 2000s. Two decades in and out of this seat is institutional memory, and it is how you tell a constitutionalist from a good résumé.

Courts outlast governors. Getting judges right matters more than almost anything else the Council does. At the same meeting Wheeler voted against a $750,000 sole source increase for a Boston consulting firm, because the day job does not stop for a confirmation.
